When one of the biggest air shows in the country is grounded, you make it virtual!

An introduction to the concept of virtual production and RIT’s partnership with Epic Games, PRG, The Third Floor, and Optic Sky Productions with the initiative to create educational theoretical and practical curriculums for RIT students. Epic Games has made RIT a Megagrant recipient, granting RIT funds to further advance the understanding of virtual production and to familiarize students with these practices. RIT has committed to creating a series of educational videos that chronicle the classes and projects students and faculty put together in the Spring 2021 semester.

A brief history of practical and computer-generated special effects that have come to be a part of the broad spectrum of Virtual Production. Professors, researchers, and professionals give their perspectives on the definition of virtual production and the technologies it developed from.

An overview of the two Virtual Production courses developed by RIT over the Spring 2021 semester: Virtual Production I and Previsualization and Virtual Cinematography. Students reflect on research, learning new programs, projects, and the real commercial production facilitated by Optic Sky productions that served as experience and class content.

Chris Edwards, Founder and CEO of The Third Floor, gives background and insight into the world of Previs and how it has become an integral part of Virtual Production and large scale filmmaking. He discusses the development of their work and how they support the biggest films in Hollywood and how they are aiming to develop a new generation of virtual artists by sharing their knowledge and tools with RIT.

An insight and discussion about the necessity of understanding language between disciplines for effective virtual production. Film Production, 3D Digital Design, and Motion Picture Science students and faculty discuss the challenges and learnings from collaborating and communicating between the different majors.

A closer look at one of the key technologies enabling virtual production: Motion Tracking. Students, faculty, and professionals discuss how motion tracking works, how it allows for realism and creativity with virtual production, and the different systems tested at RIT over the semester.

A deeper dive into one of the technologies most currently associated with virtual production: LED wall and Rear Projection backgrounds. Students, faculty, and professionals discuss the history of background replacement, the pros and cons of the different technologies, and the challenges of creating a realistic replacement of an imaginary environment on a flat screen.
